New Bags...Finished

Okay, so while I have the Broken Dishes quilt up on my design wall, I thought it was time to get back to sewing some handbags. Here is the second clutch I was working on. The pin I wanted to use did not work out so I ended up using this one.

This cute little bag is large enough to only hold a few things (cell phone, keys, lipstick, and a very small, tiny wallet.

And I decided to sew this cute little purse.

I think that's enough for now.

Broken Dishes on My Design Wall

All of my Broken Dishes blocks, 156 to be exact, are all done and up on my design wall. I was lucky that they all fit.

They will stay on the wall for a week or two so that I can tweak it here and there. I always find that I have to move a blocks around. And it always surprises me to find that I still need to make changes even after I think I am all done. I usually spend a few minutes several times a day rearranging the blocks. But after two weeks, I am done!

So that's what I have been playing with. What have you been up to?

Broken Dishes Update

I am still working on my clutch handbags, but had an opportunity to take a break and work on my Broken Dishes quilt. I have sewn all my triangles together and am now ironing...

Now that the ironing is all done, I have a huge pile that I have to trim to size (3-1/2" squares).

And then, I will sew them together, to form these blocks.

And then, I will have to arrange them in a pleasing manner...

My daughter took one look at these blocks and she commented that the fabrics/colors I used were not "me. I totally agree with her, but I wanted to break out of my box. Now that I am about half way done, I am getting excited. I can't wait to see how this one turns out.

A New Evening Clutch Handbag

I finished a new clutch handbag using a belt for the handle. I am going to keep this one for myself because it is my prototype and I consider it a learning experience. Does anyone else do that? I try to make all my mistakes. Luckily, there were no mistakes on this one, but I did learn a few things. For instance, there was a lot of bulk at the corners and my Symphony sewing machine was not handling it too well. So I ended up using my old Singer machine to top-stitch. And the next time I sew the lining, I am going to make it at least 1/2" smaller all around the curved sides.

It is roomy...

So hopefully, the next one that I make (hopefully by the end of the week) will turn out a bit better.

Working on a Clutch Bag and Ear Bud Storage

I have been away from blogging for a while to enjoy the holidays and to celebrate the new year. So on that note... I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year and hope that you were able to spend it with family and friends.

Here is what I have been working on. I bought this belt and belt clip in hopes of using them on a some handbags.

I decide to use them on a clutch bag. Here are the fabrics I have picked for the outside and lining for two bags.

I plan on using the chain belt for the fabrics on the left and the belt clip with the fabrics on the right. So stay tuned for my finishes.

On another note, I found a tutorial for an ear bud pouch here. I always hated stuffing my ear buds here and there, so now I have a zippered storage pouch for them. I love it.

Quilting On My New Joy Frame and My Very Last Christmas Gift

Okay so now that my quilting frame is all set up. I put my quilt on and gave it a go. Here are some pictures,

So far, there are no loops in the back and it is no longer shaking as the machine goes over the rails. I am happy...finally! Now to improve my quilting stitches.

On another note, I finished my last gifts for the Christmas Club through the Year which was hosted by Allie from Allie-Oops Sweet Happy Life. Go on over to see what everyone else did. There are some great tutorials that were posted throughout the year. I managed to actually do a few. I love sachets, but I have been having difficulty finding decent filling, except for lavender. So what to do...well I had a whole bunch of perfumes that I thought might help me out. The first thing I had to do was to take the tops off the perfume bottles. I have to admit that it is a bit tricky, but with pliers and some perseverance, I managed to get it done without hurting myself. Then I filled a small tub (the kind you get from take out) with rice and added the perfume to cover the rice. You need to see a bit of liquid on top of the rice. Leave it out for about two weeks so that the rice absorbs all the liquid and is completely dry. I would on occasion mix it with wooden chopsticks.

Then I cut out shapes (birds, hearts, stars, whatever) and filled them with the rice. Here is a picture of two that I made for myself. I have made a lot more, but they are Christmas presents and I would like to keep them a surprise. I embellished the ones I am giving as gifts. For instance for the bird, I blanket stitched wool wings on both sides of the bird and added button and beads for the eyes. For the heart, I added a collection of buttons, beads, and some lace. The best thing about this is that you can be as creative or as simple as you like and use up your scraps at the same time.

New License Plate Cover

At the beginning of the month we had our annual Christmas party at the firehouse. We exchanged presents and I ended up with a license plate cover and a fat quarter bundle. I was excited! When I came home and showed my husband, I was a bit surprised...he got up off the couch and went and put it on my car right away. I chuckled, I think this is so cute and accurate.

I whited out the plate number...is this not too funny?

He is a bit concerned about the looks he will get when he is driving my car.

New Joy Quilt Frame Problem/Fix

I have not been able to quilt on my New Joy Gold frame because I have been a bit frustrated with it skipping stitches when the sewing machine got to a certain spot. After a lot of researching, I realized that the frame could not support my sewing machine (Janome 1600P) at the center point between the center and side legs. This was not a problem with the smaller quilt frame, but I purchased the larger (wider) frame. So what to do? I read all the comments and convos on the Google site and found one person who had her husband support the frame better...so I asked my husband to help me. First I called the support group and spoke with Tom to see if I could buy 4 additional legs and leg supports (the metal bar that goes between the front and back legs). Luckily, they had some in some in stock, so I ordered them. My husband had to drill holes into the frame to install the legs. Then we leveled the frame with shims. Of course, my husband did not like this solution because he did not think they would stay in place, so he surfed the web to find these 1"square tube insert and hex. He bought them on the International Components website for under $4 each. What these inserts allow you to do, is to raise or lower each leg individually. So we replaced all of the original inserts (that came with the frame) with these new inserts and then leveled the frame. I have to say that this frame is really secure now. I can't wait to try quilting on it. I know this was such a long post, but I wanted to provide this information to anyone else out there who might have this problem. I know how frustrating it was for me. I cannot tell you how frustrated...and you don't want to know.

Butterfly Handbag and after Thanksgiving

Well, Thanksgiving was a really nice day spent with family. Every year I promise myself that I will not "overcook", but as always there are a lot of left overs and no one in the house, except for hubby and me. The week end was spent driving the kids back to school and now it's time for me to get to business...I mean sewing. Hope all those who celebrated had a blast.

Here is a new bag I made with brocade fabrics. I used several different purple brocade fabrics for the outside and fully lined it with cotton fabric. This bag is great because it is tall enough to hold your eyeglass case. Usually I only take the bare essentials when I go out in the evening (lipstick, drivers license, and a few dollars), but as I am getting older I am finding it hard to find a spot for my eyeglasses. I don't need them all the time, but I definitely need them to drive and to read fine print (bi-focals). Any way, getting back to the bag. I used a decorative fabric covered button on the flap. It closes with a metal snap on the inside of the flap.

I named it the Butterfly Handbag because the brocade fabrics have butterflies all over them. Look how roomy it is on the inside.

New Handbags

I have been playing around a bit with a few new handbags. Some I made from old magazine articles I had saved, some from JoAnn's web site, and some are originals. Here are a few I can show you.

This is from an old magazine. I just love the Lotus flower pulls.

This one is a JoAnn, but I altered it a bit. I used a belt for the pull. I purchased the belt without ever planning on using it as one. I just loved the colors and thought I would use it someday on a handbag (as handles or as decoration).

This tote is an original. I found the trim at a garage sale for under $3 for about 5 yards. I just could not pass it up. I had enough fabric to make a zippered pouch which I forgot to take a picture of.

These past few weeks I have been thinking about my blogging and have decided that I will only post once a week and just show off what I have made. I think I will get a lot more accomplished this way. I will also read the blogs I follow on a weekly basis. Of course, I will always answer all comments left on my blog...which leads me to this:

A New Wristlet

I have been working on a new wristlet. This is my prototype. It is constructed from purple decorator/upholstery fabrics. It is fully lined with 100% cotton fabric. The tricky part was the wrist strap, but I think I managed to get it just right. I embellished the front with a large purple flower that I made from wired ribbon, buttons, and flower centers. It was a bit time consuming to hand-stitch the flower to the front of the wristlet, but I did not want to glue it on.

I have a great many ribbon ribbon books, but none that I love as much as this one. It is titled Passion For Ribbonry by Camela Nitschke. It is an old book, so I don't even know if it's still sold at book stores, but if you see one at a garage sale, do not pass it up.

On a side note, I ended up making another potpourri sachet for my closet. I cross stitched this chair a long time ago and it was just sitting around in my sewing room until today.

Too Long

This is the longest that I have not posted...but I have a fairly good reason. I was lucky enough to go away on vacation for two weeks. My husband and I were celebrating our big wedding anniversary and we went to Amsterdam and Munich (Oktoberfest). We were lucky enough to go with our close friends who were also celebrating their anniversary. We had a great time and my friend posted pictures on her blog bestfriends25th.blogspot.com. I wish I could post pictures, but I borrowed my daughter's camera and am waiting for her to get home from school. Why you ask? because I cannot find the connector between the computer and camera.

And this past week, we have been without power so I was unable to post...and so the excuses pile up.

However I do have one picture I would love to share with you. This quilt top is the result of the my summer sew days with my friend Priscilla. I love the way it turned out. It is a string quilt, but I had drafted a picture of it before I began working on it. So all the blocks were planned before I sewed them together. It was really quite easy, but I could not do a thing without the draft paper.

It is really large, a little over a 100" x 100". I thought I was going to use it in my bedroom, I desperately need a quilt for my bed. Would you believe I do not have one for it yet? But the more I look at it, I see it is just right for one of my daughters. So, as always, guess where it will end up?

And, by the way, I have been keeping up with my Christmas Through the Year Club gifts. I have just not had enough time to post pictures of what I have made. Hopefully I will do that soon.

Funky Star Quilt Top Finished

So I spent the day at our monthly get together at the firehouse. One day I really should take a picture of all the ladies, if they let me, so that I can post it. While there, I finally finished the my Funky Star Quilt top. I am now ready to think about quilting it. I love the way it turned out. I know I can't cross it off my UFO list, but I am almost there.

The colors in this picture are a bit off, but it's the best I could do.

A Long Stretch of TIme

It has been a long time since I last posted. I have not been sitting idle. So I hope you are ready for a lot of pictures.

This is a bag that I have been working on. I wanted it to be a large, shopping bag that I could hang on my shoulder or across my shoulder.

I just love adding pins to bags...it's a good thing I collect them.

So I thought since this was my shopping bag, I would make a complimenting change purse. I saw this Zip-Itself Coin Purse Tutorial that I thought I would give a try. I did not shape mine into a tetrahedron like they suggested because I thought I would get more use in a flat shape like this one:

I don't know if you are all familiar with Borders (book store), but they are closing so I decided to take a look. I found this book and I love it.

You can see all my post-its on the right hand side (future projects). There was a project containing old keys...and since I collect old keys, I decided to give it a try. Here is the result:

I love it so much, I decided to make earrings to match, I guess I should've taken a picture, but I forgot to. I am not a silversmith and I do not plan on being one any time soon, but I love taking found objects and make them into useful items, whether it is for jewelry, handbags, or dolls. Found stuff, you ask? I collect anything and everything that catches my eye. I then try to organize them...

I have old Scrabble tiles, computer keys, etc. in jars.

Christmas Club Project Done - A Wristlet

Vinyl Rain Bag Tutorial

Vinyl Rain Bag (Finished 12 1/2” h x 18” w x 2” d)

Materials:

½ yard cotton fabric for bag exterior

½ yard cotton fabric for lining

½ yard cotton fabric for inside pocket and handles

2 yards fusible interfacing

2-1/2 yards of vinyl (I used Therm O Web® glossy finish. I tried the matte finish, but found it to be difficult to work with.)

16” – 17” metal zipper

Jeans 100/16 Needle (This is a must because you will be sewing throughseveral layers of fabric.)

6 – 12 metal paper clips (I used the ones you purchase atan office supply store. I am sureyou can purchase them in sewing/craft stores, but they will be expensive incomparison. The clips are used tohold the vinyl fabric layers together. You cannot use pins because they will leave holes in the vinyl.)

*** Read all instructions first. ***

***All seams are ½” unless otherwise noted. ***

***Always backstitch when sewing two fabrics together. ***

***Always use a zipper foot when attaching zipper. ***

*** Iron on interfacing and vinyl to all fabric pieces prior tocutting. I prefer this method tocutting first and then adhering the interfacing and vinyl. It makes for a smoother finish.***

Preparation:

1. Ironinterfacing to wrong side of inside pocket and handle fabric followingmanufacturer’s instructions.

2. Remove paper backing from vinyl andplace on top of right side of inside pocket and handle fabric followingmanufacturer’s instructions. I found that the best way to dothis was to pull away the paper backing slowly and smoothing the vinyl onto the fabric asI unroll the paper backing. It isreally a good idea to go slowly since repositioning the vinyl sometimes causescracks. I did repostion the vinyla few times, but took my time so as to avoid this issue. Just a note, I found that the mattefinish was harder to work with than the glossy finish. And in the end, I liked the glossyfinish better.

3. Apply vinyl to right side of bag exterior fabric following manufacturer’s instructions and hints described in previous step.

Handles:

1. Cut two 6” x width of fabric fromthe inside pocket/handle fabric.

2. Draw acenterline on each handle (lengthwise) by measuring 3” from short sides.

3 3. Foldraw edges toward this centerline, wrong sides together.

4 4. Fold again so that raw edges are hidden and clipin place.

5 5. Sew¼’ away from folded edge.

6. Flip and sew ¼’ away from the other folded edge.

7 7. Repeat with the other handle.

8 8. Cuthandles so that they measure 41”.

Exterior of Bag:

1. Cut two 14” x 20 ½” (h x w) rectanglesfrom the bag exterior fabric.

2. Sew zipperto bag following manufacturer’s instructions. I prefer to first sew the left zipper tape to front of bag,right sides together. Do not usepins to hold zipper tape in place. Only use the paper clips. Ido not use anything during this step because I find it easier to maneuver.

4 3. Repeat with the other side of zipper (right)tape and back of bag.

4. Take one of the handles and place theraw edges 6” from side of front of bag. Clip in place. Make surethe handle is laying properly, without twisting.

6 5. Baste handles inplace.

7 6. Measure and mark (I used chalk formarking) 9” from bottom, raw edge of each side of handle. This line will be used to sew handle tofront of bag. You will sew up anddown the sides of the handle up to this drawn line.

8 7. Sew/topstitchsides of handle to front of bag using a ¼’ seam allowance. I used my ruler to keep my sewing linestraight. I backstitched acrossthe marked line to secure the handle in place.

9 8. Repeat with the other handle andback of bag.

Lining and Inside Pocket:

1. Cut two 14 ½” x 20 ½” (h x w)from lining fabric and set aside.

2. Cut 12” x7” (h x w) from inside pocket/handle fabric.

3. Fold inhalf, right sides together, so that it measures 6” x 7”. Sew around 3 sides, leaving about a 2”opening for turning. Clip corners.

4. Turn rightside out and place on one of the lining pieces, right sides together. The pocket should be placed 4” downfrom top, raw edge and 7 1/8” from side, raw edges. The pocket can be pinned in place since there is no vinyl.

5. Sew the three sides of the pocketin place, leaving the top open. This will be the liningback. I call it this because I like to have the pocket facing me when I open a handbag.

6. Sew liningfront to left zipper tape, right sides together. Make sure that the handles do not get in the way of yoursewing.

I did not do a good job with this picture. The lining is on the bottom.

7. Sew thelining back (the one with the inside pocket) to the right zipper tape, rightsides together. Again, make surethat the handles do not get in the way of your sewing.

8. Pull the bag front (exterior fabric and lining) to oneside, wrong sides together, andpull the bag back (exterior fabric and lining), wrong sides together, to theother side. Topstitch ¼”away from the zipper teeth. Thisstep is important to secure the zipper in place. This step also makes the bag more professional inappearance.

9. Close the zipper half way. This step is very important for turningthe handbag right side out. Do not skip it.

10. Clip (using the metal paper clips) the front and back of bag, rightsides together, and pin the lining (front and back), right sides together.

11. Sew around all four sides,leaving a 5” opening for turning. I prefer to leave the opening on one of the sides as opposed to thebottom of the bag for asthetic purposes only. Be careful when you are sewing over the zipper. Go slowly (I ususally hand turn the sewingmachine when I get to this point) and backstitch to secure zipper in place. Cut any excess zipper tape, if there is any.

12. Turn rightside out through opening and then again through zipper.

13. Congratulations you are done.

My New "Rain" Handbag and Accuquilt Giveaway

Okay, so I have a raincoat, rain boots, but no rain handbag...so guess what I did? I made one. It is the first time that I have ever worked with vinyl (iron-on) sheeting, so this was a new experience. I took pictures along the way, so if anyone is interested in making a waterproof bag, let me know. I would love to share my insight and tips. After all, that's what blogging is all about, right? I wish I could avoid the glare, I will have to learn how to do this, but until then, this is the best picture I could come up with.

Miniature Chairs

I feel like I have not posted in forever...I have been busy with my string quilt blocks and making a few new bags. In the mean while, I thought I would share some of my miniature chair collection with all of you. I cannot show you the 200 or so chairs I have, but I can show you a few of my favorites. What do I do with them? Some hold dolls, others pictures, still others candles, and some have plants on them. This picture is of a shelf in my sewing room/studio.

These two are on a shelf in my living room. The one on the left I bought at a Vermont craft shop. Can you guess what it is made from?

Here's a hint:

If you guessed, a tomato paste can, you would be right!

And here is my largest chair, it holds my African Violet plant.

Week 3 of the Summer Sampler Series

I finished the next 3 blocks for the Summer Sampler Series. Here they are...

I had a really hard time with that middle block. It turned out okay, but I could not play with it any more (4 hours was enough).

I am currently working on the last 3 blocks and hope to post a picture of them next week. I have just started to think about sashing and borders.

Another Win and Some Mice

On another note, just had another sew-in yesterday where I was really frustrated. I worked on one paper piecing block (for the Summer Sampler Series) for over 4 hours. I will post a picture of it at a later date. So what did I do to calm down? I made some mice of course.

Goodies From Thailand

My niece, Robin, just got back from Thailand and was kind enough to remember me. She brought back this miniature chair because she knows I have a soft spot for them. Isn't it beautiful?

So, Robin, if you are reading this, thank you again.

She also brought back some fabrics (silk and cotton) for her mother and I to share. So in the next few weeks I will be thinking what we can make out of these beautiful fabrics.

It is really hard to tell with this picture, but the colors are really vibrant and the fabrics are quite beautiful.

Bread Basket and Christmas Through the Year Club Finish

I have completed my bread basket (thanks again Fiona). I breezed through it and finished sewing the binding when I realized that I could not fold it over correctly. So I thought, no problem, I would just cut an 1/8" off the sides. Never do this, I cut off the corners and had to redo the binding. I could not salvage the linen fabric and, believe me, I tried. So in the end I had to use a different fabric for the binding. But I did learn a very, very important lesson. I know that I will never make that same mistake again. I ended up using a very stiff batting (the kind you use for fabric bowls) so that it would keep its shape.

I love how it turned out! It is just fantastic. The best part is that I can untie the corner ribbons and it will lay flat. I plan on using this at the next barbeque.

On another note, I made a few pin cushions for the Christmas Through the Year club. I plan on giving one of them at the firehouse Christmas party with some other goodies. And the other two pin cushions will be given away to friends.

Hey, I won a giveaway hosted by Fiona of BubzRugz. She sent me a bread basket kit along with a sweet note...

I love the colors of the fabrics. Unfortunately, it looks a bit yellow in this picture.

I wish I had taken a picture of it before I unwrapped it because it looked so nice with the ribbon and all. I can't wait to get started on making the bread basket and this one I am going to keep for myself. I love the fabrics. They feel so nice, I wish you could feel them.

A Week of Summer Sampler Series

Here are the next 3 blocks from the Summer Sampler Series.

I have to say that I am learning a bit. For instance, I have never worked on pieces with 60 degrees. The third block (in the picture above) I worked on was composed of 60 degree pieces. The instructions were very easy to follow and I did not have any issues sewing them together. The second block was paper pieced. I am not a fan of paper piecing, but I do not mind doing it from time to time. However, I would never sew an entire quilt using paper piecing techniques.

I am beginning to like this series. I can't wait for this week's blocks.

My First Mug Rug and Another Summer Sampler Series Block Completed

I have seen so many mug rugs on different blogs, so I finally decided to take the plunge. Here is a picture of my first mug rug.

This is a cheater cloth and I bought it a long time ago, but could never find a use for it. So I cut it down a bit and then quilted along the fence, flowers, and birdhouse. I was thinking about adding beads and buttons, until I realized how silly that would be. It would so get in the way of placing a mug/cup and cookies. Sometimes I get so caught up on the creativity that I forget the initial purpose.

I also managed to make my third block for the Summer Series quilt along. This block was a bit hard. It looks so easy, but matching all the points was not!!! But it is done. I am currently working on the next block.

We had another sew in yesterday and here is a picture of the table we were working on. It's a bit cleaner than usual...

Square Pin Cushion and Block #2 Done

I have always wanted to make this simple pin cushion, but have never gotten around to making it until yesterday. I love this pin cushion! I used a ceramic button that I won in a giveaway. I thought it was perfect for the fabrics I used.

I also finished block #2 in the Summer Sampler Series quilt along. I am ready to tackle block #3.

A Day of Sewing

It is amazing how fast the day goes when you sew with someone. My friend Priscilla and I had another sew in (that's what I am going to call it). We started in the morning and sewed until about 5:30. I worked on my colorful quilt. Here is what I managed to get done.

Next time, I am going to take a picture of our table. It is such a mess and we would not have it any other way.

Joined a New Summer Sampler Series Group

I must be crazy because...I decided to start another quilt. I ran across the Summer Sampler Series quilt along hosted by Freshly Pieced, Fresh Lemons Quilts, and Swim, Bike, Quilt and decided to join the fun. Each week we will make 3 blocks; there is a tutorial for each block. Of course I decided to join at the very last minute, so I was a bit behind. I have never made a quilt using only solid fabrics so I decided that's what I would do.

I had purchased these hand dyed fabrics several years ago without anything in mind. I thought they would be perfect for this quilt.

The blocks are 12" finished and here is a picture of the first block I just finished.

I will be working on the second block tomorrow...so stay tuned.

A Day Spent Sewing

A friend and I decided that we would pick a day to sew together. Well, we have managed to have two of them so far and this is what I decided to work on...

I came across this block when I was looking through my quilt binder. Quilt binder? Yes, my quilt binder holds all those pictures and sometimes instructions of quilts I would like to try. This one is from QNM April 2002 (Quiltmaker's Workshop Section) and titled Crazy Log Cabin. I had a lot of leftover brights that I thought would be great! So I just started to cut and sew. I started out with 19 blocks and, I don't care what anyone says, scrap quilts are not easy! For instance, now I am left with 15 blocks because I could not get four of the blocks to measure 13" square. I will either have 4 orphan blocks, use them in a different project, or donate them to my quilt guild...nothing goes to waste.

New Developments

So I made, not one, but two strip bags in reds. I liked the shape, but I think I wish I had placed the strips vertically like the green one. Here are the pics...

When I finished making these bags, I had a few things to put away. Which leads me to my next topic. I started to look through my garage sale finds (embroidered napkins, handkerchiefs, table runners, etc.) and I found this.

I love this! It is just beautiful. I do not know if you can tell, but the white background is see-through. So, it got me thinking of what to do with it. I decided to sew down the sides after folding it into 3 sections.

I am going to fill it with lavender and use it as a sachet in my drawers. But when I get tired of that, I think I will use it as a small pillow cover, you know the ones your husband hates to have on the bed?

And the last thing I want to talk about is my progress on my red circle quilt. I finally found a border fabric I liked, a light pink, almost blush fabric. Now I am in the process of laying out the vines, leaves and flowers on it. I love laying it out, but hate drawing the pattern on the white paper. Why? I don't know why, I just do.

I Am Back to Making Bags With Fabric Strips

I decided to make a shoulder bag using strips in the front and a solid color on the back. I quilted the front and back of this bag with cotton batting on the wrong side. I lined the bag and included a small inside pocket and decided to use a zipper since I have not done one in a while. Here is the result of my labor. I have yet to name it.

It measures 11" h x 7 1/2" w x 2 1/2" d. The shoulder strap height is 13 1/2" (measured from top of bag to where strap will rest on you shoulder).

I really like this bag, but I think I would like to make one that is a bit wider and, perhaps, not as tall. I guess I know what I will be working on tomorrow.

Wow, just wow. I did not realize how much of a response I would receive on the Go! Cutter die giveaway. I reached a new milestone, I now have 100 followers. YAY! So I will have to give this some thought. Perhaps another giveaway?

While I was using my Go! Cutter for the handbag, I thought I might like to use it on a quilt I have been working on.

I started this quilt on a retreat last March. I had purchased a Moda Jelly Roll and Honeybun from the internet. I don't usually like purchasing fabrics without touching them, but I knew I could not go wrong with Moda. I decided to pick fabrics/colors that I would not normally choose, so this quilt is very different for me. The two rolls yielded 20 log cabin blocks. Since I wanted a larger quilt, I added some yellow and brown blocks. When I finished the top, I knew that the solid blocks needed something more, so I appliqued some Funky Flowers (Go! Cutter die) on top of the brown fabric. Now what to do with the yellow corner blocks. Any suggestions?

I'm On A Roll...Another Bag

I finished another handbag today. This will be a Christmas gift for a close friend. I decided to use decorator fabrics, so it will be perfect for the holidays. This picture does not show it's true colors. The decorator fabric is sage green with hints of gold. The stripe consists of a burgundy and forest green gross grain ribbons. I found and purchased the green beaded pin a long time ago and it was perfect for this handbag.

Becca Handbag Tutorial

Okay so here it is...please let me know what you think. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me, I would love to hear from you.

Becca Handbag Tutorial (finished size approximately 12 ½”hx 13”w x 4”d)

(handle height is 10” from top of bag)

Materials:

4 different coordinating fabrics (¼ yard each) or 20 Honey Bun strips

½ yard fabric for lining and inside pocket

½ yard fabric for handles

¼ yard fabric for ruffle

5” square piece of fabric for flower

1” square piece of fabric for center of flower

19” x 30” batting

1 yard fusible interfacing

20” eyelash yarn

1 fusible sheet (at least 9” x 11”)

Snap (optional)

***Read all instructions first. ***
***All seams are ½” unless otherwise noted. ***
***Always back stitch when sewing two fabrics together. ***

Exterior of Bag:

1. Cut 20 1 ½” strips of fabricfrom the assorted ¼ yard fabrics. Skip this step if you are using Honey Bun strips.

2. Arrangethe strips in a pleasing manner. Pin and sew the strips together using ¼” seam allowance.

3. Iron allseams in one direction.

4. Cut offselvage from one side.

5. Measure29” from this cut edge and cut. When done correctly, you will have a piece measuring about 19“ x29”. Set aside the leftover piecefor later use.

6. Lay the 19“ x 29” on top of batting, right side facing up. The batting should be larger than sewn piece. It is very important that the batting be larger to accommodate shrinkage.

7. Pin thesetwo layers together. The best wayto do this is to start in center and pin every 4” or so, smoothing the toppiece as you go.

8. Quilt asdesired. I chose to sew wavy lines along every other seam. HINT: If you want your stitches to show or stand out, usecontrasting thread.

9. Cut thisquilted piece to 18” x 28”.

10. Take the 5” square of fabric and iron a fusiblebacking.

11. Iron a fusible backing to the scrap piece of fabricfor the center of the flower.

12. Place the 5” square piece of fabric over the flowershape and the scrap fabric over center circle shape on the Funky Flower die(#55042). Hint: If you do not have aGo! Cutter ®, cut a flower shape and a flower center.

13. Run through the Go! Cutter®.

14. Take off the paper backing from both pieces. Place the flower shape 2 ½” down fromtop, raw edge and 4” from side, raw edge of sewn/quilted piece.

15. Sew a blanket stitch (or any other decorative stitch)around the flower shape.

16. Wrap the eyelash yarn around your fingers 3 or 4times.

17. Place in center of flower shape and tack down.

18. Iron on flower center. Blanket stitch (or any other decorative stitch) aroundflower center. Cut the loops ofthe eyelash yarn and trim as desired.

19. Fold sewn/quilted piece in half width wise, right sidestogether.

20. Pin and sewdown the both side seams starting from top, raw edges and finishing at thebottom, folded edge.

21. Iron or fingerpress side seams open.

22. Create a boxbottom by marking the corners with a 1 ½” square. Cut on marked lines.

23. Pinch side seam andbottom center together so that they are aligned.

24. Pin and sew. Reinforce by sewing a zig zag stitchover raw edge.

25. Repeat onthe other side.

26. Turn bag,right side out and set aside.

Ruffle:

1. Cut 2 3”strips from the fabric for the ruffle.

2. Place thetwo cut strips at a 45 ˚, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line.

3. Sew on topof this line.

4. Cut offexcess, leaving a ¼” seam allowance.

5. Press seamopen.

6. Fold the3” strip, wrong sides together, so that it now measures 1 ½” wide. Iron.

7. Take thetwo ends and sew them together by repeating steps 2 - 5. If done correctly, you will now have acircle of fabric. Hint: Make sure that you do not twist this strip before sewing thetwo ends together.

8. Dividethis piece into four sections. Theeasiest way to do this is to fold this circular piece in half. Place pins on each folded end.

9. Refold byplacing these 2 pins on top of one other.

10. Place pins on thefolded ends. You should have 4pins in all. These markings willbe used to center the ruffle on the bag.

11. Baste along the rawedges using ¼” seam allowance. Hint: A ruffle foot makes this stepeasy. If your sewing machine hasone, set the dial on 2.

12. Pull the thread tocreate a ruffle that will fit along the top edge of the bag.

13. Pin ruffle to rightside of bag using the marking pins as guides. The four pins should be aligned with the left side seam,center bag front, right side seam, and center bag back.

14. Sew ruffle in placeusing a ¼” seam allowance.

Handles:

1. Cut 2 8” x 26” from thehandle fabric.

2. Take oneof the handles and fold this piece in half lengthwise, wrong sidestogether. Iron to form a crease.

3. Unfold and refold raw edges offabric toward the ironed center crease.

4. Fold again towards center sothat raw edges are hidden.

5. Pin and sew as close to thefolded edge as possible.

6. Take one raw edge of handle andplace on top raw edge of bag, right sides together, 3 ½” from side. Pin in place. Repeat on the other side of bag with the other raw edge ofhandle. Make sure that the handleis not twisted.

7. Baste inplace using ¼” seam.

8. Repeat with the other handle onthe other side of bag.

9. Set aside.

Inside Pocket:

1. Cut 5 ½” x 7” (h x w) fromleftover sewn/quilted piece.

2. Cut 5½” x 7” (h x w) from lining fabric.

3. Cut 25 ½” x 7” (h x w) from interfacing.

4. Ironinterfacing to wrong side of leftover sewn/quilted piece and lining fabric.

5. Pin thesetwo pieces, right sides together.

6. Sew aroundall four sides, leaving a 2” opening for turning, using a ¼” seam allowance.

7. Clipcorners.

8. Turnright-side out and press (finger or iron).

9. Sew the 2”opening closed.

10. Set aside.

Lining:

1. Cut 18”x28” from lining fabric and interfacing.

2. Ironinterfacing to wrong side of fabric.

3. Turn overand iron on right side of fabric to smooth out wrinkles.

4. Place pocketon the right side of lining, 3” down from top and 5 ¾” from sides.

5. Sew theleft, bottom, and right sides of pocket to lining top (leave the top of pocketopen).

6. Foldlining piece in half, right sides together and pin in place.

7. Sew bothside seams (14”).

8. Iron seamsopen.

9. Create abox bottom by marking the corners with a 1 ½” square. Cut on marked lines.

10. Pinch center seam and bottom center together. Pin in place.

11. Sew and trim seam to ¼”.

12. Sew a zig-zag stitch across raw edge to secure.

13. Repeat onother side.

14. Center and attach snapaccording to manufacturer’s instructions. Hint: Placing a small 2” square piece ofscrap fabric (or interfacing) between each snap piece is recommended.

Assembly:

1. Place outside of bag intolining, making sure that right sides are together. The handles should besandwiched between the exterior of bag and lining. The inside pocket should be facing the back of bag. Pin in place.

2. Sew aroundtop leaving a 5” or larger for turning. Hint: Reinforcing the handles at this time ishighly recommended.

3. Turn right side out.

4. Pushlining into exterior of bag and pin the top border of bag.

5. Top stitch the top of bag 1/8”down from top, making sure that the handle is pulled away from the inside of bag. Also, make sure to close the 5” openingused for turning.

6. Congratulations,you are done.

A New Iron and Another Pink Bag

I needed to purchase a new iron because my old Rowenta was dripping water. Not just dripping actually, but making large puddles. The reason why I purchased it in the first place because of Rowenta's reputation. Since it cost $70+, I thought I was going to be okay. Within the first few weeks of use, it started to drip water. I read the instructions and followed them thoroughly. I probably should have returned it right away, but I thought it was making puddles because of something I did. I cleaned it and reread the instructions, but it was just not meant to be. What I did not realize was that the model I bought was made in China and the ones that were rated highly were the ones made in Germany. So I researched for a model made in Germany and finally found one with raving reviews (Model DZ2061, $70). But guess what? ... they no longer make that model. So after some more research, I found the Rowenta Iron Pro Master (DW8080, $100) which had great reviews and was made in Germany. So hear is a picture of the package of my new iron...hope I have better luck with it. I will let everyone know.

In my last post, I made a bag with a snap closure, but wanted to make one with a zipper closure. I cannot believe how long it took me to complete. I made every mistake you could possibly make. I mean, every mistake! And I thought that all my mistakes were behind me, HA! This is the finished product.

I do like the way it turned out.

Pretty Pink Handbag

Just in the nick of time, I finished my Christmas Through the Year Club for this month. I made this handbag with a friend in mind. I know she will love it. I used bright pinks and added two trims (one made of cotton, the other from ribbon). On top of that I added a very pretty butterfly pin. I added a generous inside pocket and used a snap closure. I love how this handbag turned out.

Hey, I now have 4 gifts done, should have 5, but I am not going to be down on myself for that.

Funky Steps and Garage Sale Find

I have been busy writing a tutorial for a new handbag using the Go Cutter! Meanwhile, I finished this quilt. Of course I love the bright colors and I titled it Funky Steps because the blocks are Court House Steps.

Now that the weather is a bit warmer, it's time for garage sales. This past week, I spent $3 to purchase what you can see in this picture below (a table runner, 3 cross stitched napkins, 3 crocheted trim, and a needlepoint piece).

I made the mistake of hand washing all my finds. Unfortunately, the needlepoint piece colors bleed/ran. But I ended up liking the way it turned out. I will probably make a pillow out of this piece. The others...who knows what I will do with them, but you can be assured that I will cherish them.

My Go Cutter

My husband gave me an AccuQuilt Go cutter as a gift a few months ago. I really wanted one because I save my scraps and wanted to be able to cut them into shapes. I joined a club hosted by SewCalGal and, as a result, I was contacted by AccuQuilt. They sent me these three die cuts with mat boards! Lucky me! Thank you Accuquilt (Lee, to be exact).

I am planning on using the one to the far right as an applique for one of my handbags. So stay tuned for a tutorial. The great thing is that I can iron a fusible onto the back of my fabric before running it through the Go cutter. This way it will be all ready to iron onto my handbag.

For anyone who does not know how to use the Go cutter, it is really simple. First you pick the die cut you want and highlight the motifs with a Sharpie. Although highlighting is an option, it makes fabric placement easier, so I highly recommend it.

Then you add the fabrics you want on top of the shapes.

Then you top that with the cutting mat and run it through the Go cutter.

And voila, you have your shapes cut out for you. I piled two fabrics through each shape, so there are two flowers and two centers.

The most I have layered onto a die cut has been 6. For wool, yes I have run wool through it, I have put 2 layers. Hope this has been helpful, let me know.

Another Finish and A Squishy Package

Okay, I have to keep this short. I have completed my King's X quilt. It measures 75" x 105". I ended up quilting circles on it because the back of the quilt (brown batik fabric) warranted it.

I am really happy with the way it turned out.

On another note, I received my squishy package from Allie. I won her April giveaway for the Christmas Through the Year Club. Not only did I get to finish a Christmas gift early, but I won a prize for it, does that not beat all? Thank you Allie.

I also wanted to mention that sometimes I start to reply to a comment made on one of my posts only to realize that they are a "no-reply" blogger. So if I do not reply to any of your comments, it's because I can't.

Red, White, and Blue Quilt Finished

I have not been able to sew much, but decided to quilt some of my finished quilt tops. So I put my Red, White, and Blue quilt on my quilting frame. Much to my surprise, I did a nice job quilting it. I guess I am finally getting the hang of quilting on a frame. Well, at least, I hope so anyway.

I did a meandering quilt stitch, I took a picture of it, but I am afraid that it is very difficult to see. Here is

a picture of the back of the quilt.

I am really happy with the way this turned out. Now, the colors in this quilt are not at all the colors I normally work with. And there is a reason for that...most of the fabrics are from a strip fabric swap that was held at our firehouse get togethers. Now, I wonder what the other ladies did with their strips...hmmm.

De-cluttering and Organizing My Scraps

I do not know how many of you there are out there that save your scraps, I am one of you! Sometimes I cut my scraps right after finishing a project, but sometimes I just get lazy and put them away in a bin (neatly piled). So guess what I have been doing these past two days? Well, if you guessed cutting up my scraps, you would be right. I wish I had taken a picture of the pile before I started to cut them into squares, strips, and triangles, but I did not think about it until it was too late. Here is the result of my labors.

I cut 2"- 8" squares (1/2 sizes too), 1" - 2 1/2" strips, and all sizes of triangles (these are left over from my bias binding cuts).

Then I put them in trays...

And put the trays in see through plastic bins...

And now I feel better. The only thing that would make me happier is if I could find something to do with this...

By the way, this is only 1/2 the pile I have.

Now I will ready for another scrappy quilt, I just have to search for a pattern I like.

Finished This Month's Christmas Through the Year Gift

They are so cute and crocheted beautifully. I don't know how she does it. They are so tiny, the large mouse is 4 1/2" tall and the little ones are only 2 1/2" tall. Meet Daphne

Everyone meet Daphne...She is a very special girl. She is dressed all in green tones because she is such a big fan of nature. You could say she is very down to earth and friendly. She does not care too much for jewelry, but feels compelled to wear matching leaf earrings and necklace. She also sports a bracelet made of leaf beads as you can see in the detailed pictures. Her elbows and knees are hinged using large painted wood beads and her fingers are fully flexible. I love her hair and her relaxed attitude, hope you do too.

For now she is sitting peacefully in my ~~sewing room~~ studio.

Fun Time at the Retreat

Well, this past weekend was our guild's retreat. We all had a good time with a one mishap. Good news first, I completed a few cell phone covers...

I usually make small cell phone covers, but I needed to make some for larger cell phones, like the Blackberry. I plan on selling them at a St. Joseph's Regional High School craft fair that I will be at this coming April.

I also made a few blocks for a new quilt using Moda fabrics. I ran out of light fabrics while I was at the retreat, so I did not complete as many blocks as I would've liked...so now I have another UFO to complete.

The best part of the weekend was that I finally purchased a new sewing machine. I have been researching machines for a while. I ended up narrowing my search down to two machines, the Janome 6600 and the Babylock Symphony. The Janome 6600 is supposed to be a sturdier machine, but I have the Janome 1600P and an old Singer machine to handle my heavier projects. The Babylock had more features, but was more expensive. In the end, I ended up purchasing the Babylock Symphony. So now I have to take some time and learn to play with my new toy.

Now for the mishap. During the retreat, I was sewing and noticed that something was blowing on me. At first, I thought it was the wind, until I felt a drop of water. So I looked up to see if someone was playing around. Well, I noticed a few more drops. I looked up to find that there was a leak on the ceiling. Everyone came to my rescue (thank you!) and quickly moved my machine and projects out of the way. It was not until later that we noticed that my friend's machine and tool bin had been damaged as well. It is safe to say that my Janome MC4000 had been through a lot! Poor baby.

Funky Star Top Almost Done

I finished making all the blocks for my Funky Star Quilt. I have sewn the blocks together and it ended up being about 53" x 68". I am thinking about adding a border on the shorter side so that it will fit a twin bed. I am sorry about the quality of the picture, it is the best I could do. It has been raining here all day.

I am going away on a guild retreat this weekend with friends. I have a lot of packing to do and decisions to make. I know I will be working on my Christmas Through the Year Club project. Other than that, anything goes. In the past, my friends and I are always the first into the sewing room and the last to leave in the wee hours of the morning. Hope it will the same this year.

Oops...forgot picture and Some Sachets

In my last post I forgot to put a picture of the notebook cover. Thanks Val for catching my mistake. I made this very simple notebook cover to put in my purse.

I have made these covers before, but have not added an inside pocket like I did with this one. I think it will come in handy for me to put my cards and all those other scrap pieces of paper that float around in my purse. I always have lists of books, music, movies, etc. I would like to pick up when I am in the library, store, etc. Does anyone else do this?

I have started my Spring cleaning. I first start with making a new batch of sachets that I put in my closet and drawers. Of course, the ones in my drawers are prettier than the ones in my closets. The ones in my drawers are hand embroidered (by me). They have flaps in the back so that I can change the filling when they are no longer fragrant. Here is a picture of some of the sachets that go in my drawers:

The ones in my closet are made from linen (pictured below, on right).

How do I make them? I usually use the dried lavender buds from my garden, but this past year, they did not do too well. So I ordered them from Rina's Garden (catey13@aol.com). I was a bit apprehensive to order them sight unseen (I was worried that they would not be fragrant), but I was happy with her/their product. The next step is to sew small pouches that will fit into the sachet covers (pictured above, in middle row). Do you know what I use...dryer sheets. I prefer to use them after they have been used because they no longer have a scent and they are more pliable. I fill them with lavender (or any other flower buds/potpourri) and sew the opening. Then I put them in my sewn sachet covers. That's it. So this is my start of Spring cleaning...I think that's enough for today, phew I am wiped! :)

Utility Apron and Notebook Cover

Well I have seen utility aprons at Bahama Dawn and Sew Fantastic blogs and decided it was time for me to make myself one. I thought I could use it at craft fairs or whenever I needed to have my supplies at hand and my hands free. I had some scrap batiks fabrics leftover from my last quilt, so I decided to use them. I pretty much just measured myself to see how much fabric/tie length I would need and eyeballed the placement of the pockets. I tried it on and I have to say it looks chic (mainly because it hides my middle, LOL). Here is the result:

I wish the lighting was better (the fabrics are a bit more vibrant than they appear), but the weather is not cooperating. We need some sunshine around here!

I don't know about anyone else, but I used to be a pretty decent speller. I never noticed how things had changed until I started blogging. Most times I would look at a word and know that it was spelled incorrectly and other times spell checker would highlight them for me (thank God). So, now, I find myself looking words up in the dictionary (no not in book form) on the internet and have found that practice does improve your skills. Just another great thing about blogging...so if I spell anything wrong, please forgive me. I am trying.

A Funny Story and Kings X Quilt

This past week I went to a hand specialist (orthopedist) because I had a bump on my thumb. It was not hurting me at first, but then when I went to use my scissors, I could not cut a thing. Well, we can't have that, so I set up an appointment and the doctor told me it was a cyst. I could either let it go (out of the question if I cannot use a scissor) or have surgery to remove it. He said that it happens to women my age. To which I replied, "What do you mean?" He said, "Well, women between the ages of 45 - 60." I said, "But I am only 22, don't let my gray hair fool you." I thought he was going to pass out, he took a step backwards, put a hand on my file (which was on the counter), and was looking for my age. I finally started to laugh. He said, "Oh, I thought, oh I thought..." I am glad he had a sense of humor.

Anyway, on another note, I finished my Kings X quilt top. Here it is...

A Pot of Tea and Some Projects

Every morning I try to exercise before my day begins. I am not always successful, but I try. The best part of the day comes when I am finished and I put on a pot of tea. My husband bought me this tea pot...

Isn't it pretty? It makes about 4 cups (2 mugs) of tea and it is the way I start my day, officially. The thing I like most about this pot is that it is pretty hard to break...yes, I have broken a few in the past.

I have been working on my Kings X quilt the past day or two. I put this border on and found I did not like it at all.

So I was thinking about taking it off and redoing it. I let it sit on my wall and kept looking at it (while I was sipping some tea). And then I thought, "What if I just make the border a bit narrower?" So, I think I will be cutting it to about 2" finished and see if I like that before I proceed. And while I was waiting for it all to sink in, I decided to make an eye glass case.

This fabric is somewhat hard to find, it is faux leather, but it works beautifully. As you can see I do not have to finish the edges. I picked blue because it matches the blue beaded chain I use for my glasses.

I usually do not have any problems with snaps, but I think I may have gone through 4 of them before it worked properly. Even using the heavy-duty snaps did not help. Oh well, at least it is fine now. The last time I made an eyeglass cover, I used Velcro which I do not like to use, but the cover was too thick for snaps. Here is a picture of my first eye glass case...

That's it for now. I am currently working on a UFO and making an apron to wear at craft shows. Will have pics in a day or two.

A Relaxing Day and Gift Bags

Last week a friend and I decided to get together and sew. We both wanted to make seat cushions so that we would be more comfortable when we go away on retreats. After our first attempt, we decided to take a break for lunch and, afterwards, I made a few gift bags. I got the instructions from A Spoonful of Sugar. The instructions were easy to follow and they were a cinch to put together.

And the rest of the day, I spent working on my Kings X quilt. I have now finished the center of the quilt and will be putting on the borders this week.

All I can say is...I am ready for another day of sewing together.

Strip Fever...

This is the new bag that I have been working on...

It is similar to the Spring Fever Bag, but it does not have a flower pin and I decided to tie the shoulder straps. I really like all of the fabrics in this bag, mainly because I love batiks (and they are all batiks). I ended up using a snap closure, but can see another bag with, perhaps, a button and loop closure in my future. Well, that will be for another day.

Christmas Through the Year Club...February Project Complete

My February project for the Christmas Through the Year Club (hosted by Allie-oops sweet happy life) is complete. I saw some chicken pin cushions when I was in a quilt and yarn shop in Stowe, Vermont. I asked if there was a pattern for them. Unfortunately there wasn't one, but I was told that it was done by making two Log Cabin blocks and two prairie points (for the tail). So I gave it a try and this is what I came up with. I like it! I am definitely going to be making more of them. It's fairly simple and fun to make.

I have made a few more Spring Fever Bags that I will post pictures real soon.

Making A Lot of Progress

I have been able to make a lot of progress these past two days. I finally added binding to my triangle quilt.

In the end, I decided to sew the two handles of my Spring Fever Bag (thanks for the name Sandra). I did not want to tie it and I thought adding a button would be overwhelming because of the pin.

I have been cutting out my applique pieces for my Red Circle Quilt (Drunkard's Path). I cut 80" of bias binding, about 100 1/4 circles that have been sewn together, and 30 leaves. I still have 40 more leaves to sew and cut, but I can see the finish line.

And my latest Decorator Bag...

I made this one with shoulder straps and ties. I added beads to the end of the ties.

I am currently working on my Christmas Through the Year Club. Well, mostly just thinking about it, but hope to get to it soon.

Funky Stars

While I am busy cutting out applique pieces for my Drunkard's Path (red circle) quilt, I decided to show the blocks I made while up in Vermont. This is the last set of blocks I made while on vacation.

I learned how to make these stars years ago when I took a class with Rachel Clark. I made a sample of the block and have been looking at it from time to time. I finally decided to make the plunge. I am not sure how many of these blocks I have made and I do not know how many more I will make...I like the fact that no two stars are alike and they can be made from small scraps. Most of the star fabrics are from fat eights or fat quarters. So for now, these funky star blocks will sit in a pile until I have enough of them to complete a quilt.

Progress On My Red Circle Quilt

I have made some progress on my Drunkard's Path (red circle quilt). As you can see, I have added border #1 and am planing on adding two more borders. Border #2 will be slightly wider than border #1 and border #3 will probably be about 10" wide (I plan on appliqueing on border #3). I am having fun with this one now.

King's X Block

While at Smuggler's Notch, Vermont I started to make a few blocks, 48 to be exact, for a new quilt. The pattern is called the King's X Block. It is fairly a simple pattern which is what I wanted so that I could showcase the batiks I was using. In short, you pick 8 different fabrics, cut them into squares, cut diagonal strips, and then reposition the piles you are left with. You sew these piles together and you end up with 8 blocks. I was playing around with four of them and I decided on this layout.

I will be making more blocks, not sure how many yet, to make a King size quilt.

Sneak Peek at a Spring Bag

I have been working on a shoulder bag for spring. I have yet to name it, what do you think?

I love the colors of these fabrics; they will be great for Spring. Don't you just love the flower pin? I purchased it a long time ago with the hopes of using it on a handbag. It seemed perfect for this bag.

The only thing I wanted for this bag was for it to have adjustable straps. At first, I was going to tie the two shoulder straps together. But, when I was done sewing it, I had a change of heart. I think it would look much better if I added a button to one strap and, perhaps, several button holes to the other strap. Or I may just end up sewing them together. What do you think?

Sorry about the pics, I wish I could have done better. I will retake these pictures when we finally get some sun around here in the Northeast. It has been snowing all day. We were only supposed to get 6" by Thursday morning, but there is 6" on the ground now. It has been tapering off a bit, but I wonder how much more we will get by tomorrow.

While Watching the Football Game

Yesterday, while I was watching the football games, I decided to do some hand embroidery.

I purchased this printed, linen table runner for about a quarter at a garage sale. I knew I would not use it as a table runner, but I could not pass it up. I only embroidered one end of it and halfway up the sides. I think it will make a really nice pillow. But since I am working on my Drunkard's Path (circles) quilt, this will be put aside as a UFO for a while.

We took a short trip to Smugglers Notch, Vermont just to get away before DDs went back to school. It was absolutely beautiful, but I do think that we got more snow in New Jersey than they did in Vermont. Here is a picture of the view outside my window.

I finally completed the Drunkard's Path (circles) blocks so now I am ready to arrange them all on my design wall.

I also started two new quilts while I was up there. I have yet to take pictures of the blocks I completed, but I will post them as soon as I do. I was quite surprised at how much I was able to accomplish. Well, I have to get back to laundry and unpacking. Talk to you all soon.

Some Scrap Booking and My January Gift Club

A few days ago, I went to put away my Christmas pictures when I discovered that I was way behind in my scrap booking...three years to be exact. So I set up my supplies in my family room in the hopes that whenever I had a few minutes, I would do a page or two. While I was creating a page...I lost sight of what it is I wanted to accomplish. Here is the page that I am talking about.

I love the way it turned out, but in the process of my creativity, I forgot to leave space for pictures. I hope I am not the only one who does this. In the end, I did not use this page, but I did catch up on all of my pictures (and there was a lot). I completed a book and a half (about 60 pages). I am quite proud of myself. Yay me!

Allie from Allie-oops Sweet Happy Life had a great idea for a club. She has posted about making a gift a month so that when Christmas comes around, whoever participates will have 12 gifts completed. Hopefully, this will prevent some of us from the last minute stresses around the holidays. Allie has been posting about ideas and tutorials. My gift for this month is for my daughter (a super sized market bag). I do not mind posting who this gift is for because the minute she sees the material that I used, she will know it is for her. The other gifts I make, I will post about, but will not name the recipient.

Thank you Allie for this great idea. I have been looking at some of the tutorials you sited and I am already thinking about the gift I will make in February.

Happy, Happy New Year!

Well, a new year has begun! I am so excited. I do not make any resolutions, I gave up on that a long time ago (no will power). But I do like the fact that it is a new beginning with a clean slate. Although I have a few UFO's I am planning on finishing them by year's end.

While my husband was outside digging us out of the snow, I was sitting inside doing some reading. I was lucky enough to get some books and magazines for Christmas. The Handbag (an illustrated history) by Caroline Cox (not pictured) has a lot of information regarding how the handbag came about. The Handbags book written by Anna Johnson (pictured with the Haute Handbags magazines) is a cute, little book. Each page depicts a picture of a handbag with a brief description of its history. None of these books/magazines really give you instructions on how to make the bags, but they do give you a lot of ideas. I am having fun with them and hope to come up with some new handbags this year.

Hope all of you have a very happy new year and that you have the will power to keep all of your resolutions.

New Ornaments and My Favorite Tips

A friend and I took a day trip to Lancaster County, PA to visit the quilt shops. While we were in one of the shops, we found some cute stocking ornaments. I made a few...

I was so happy to finally find a pattern that was very easy to follow.

Now, for my two favorite tips that I have learned along the way. The first I learned when I started making art dolls. I cannot recall if someone mentioned it to me or if I read it somewhere, but they suggested using hemostats for stuffing. They said that this reduced the lumping that can occur...and they were so right. The other tip I learned a long time ago while watching the Carol Duvall Show, where they said that if you put cream on your hands prior to using the glue gun, the glue would not stick to you. As someone who always burned her fingers every time I used the glue gun, I was so thankful for this tip/advice.

Now I am passing on these tips...would love to hear from all of you as to what your favorite tips are. Who knows, I may pick up some new tricks.

I have a tendency to cut out articles I like and keep them in a binder. A long time ago, I had seen a tabletop covered with wine corks. At the time, although I did not have a table top I could use this technique on, I kept the article. Through the years I have been collecting corks with the hopes of someday using them on a project similar to the one in the article. I thought it might work on a door, cork board, etc.. Recently, we removed a couch from my family room and had to do a re-do. When all was said and done, I needed a small side table. So with my corks in hand, I thought I could make a side table. I had an old, damaged globe stand that was in my basement for about a year. Why did I keep it? I honestly don't know, but I am glad I did. Because here is what my side table looks like now...

I have to say that I used a lot more corks than I thought I would. But I do love the way it looks and it is functional (after adding a glass top). Isn't it neat?

A New Web Site and My 100th Post (and Giveaway)

A New Wool Coat and Some Clutches

I do love working with wool and I had a few yards of black...so I decided to make myself a new wool coat. Why? Who knows? I already had a coat pattern I wanted to try. So I purchased some black fur (I do not know what else to call it) and here is the back and front. If I ever make another wool jacket, I think I will opt for a simpler back...there was too many darts! My freshman high school sewing teacher would be so proud. I do not know how many of you had to take a sewing/cooking class when you were in high school, but it paid off for me. I had one semester of sewing and she spent a lot of time explaining how to read a pattern and how to pin and cut. I was bored out of my mind when we had to learn this and the parts of the machine, but now I am thankful that I know the basics.

On another note, I have been playing around with making some new clutches. I pretty much used the same fabrics, but I tried to make different styles.

I added a purchased pin. I love this fabric.

I added a flower as you suggested, but it only looked good when the fabric strips were running horizontal.

Three New Handbags and a Surprise Package

I have been working on some new styles of bags. I have always liked the look and feel of wool, but wool is hard to come by these days and very expensive. But I had some black and red wool and this is what I ended up with...

It is fully lined with an inside pocket. I decided to use a snap closure and then hand sewed a flower to the outside. The button is covered with cotton fabric (the same one I used for the inside pocket).

Then I started to think about making some clutch bags, basically because my daughter said I should and she likes them. I think they can be a bit boring, so I decided to add strips of fabric together (because I do love scrappy). Then I decided to add some beaded fringe. Here is the result...

Then I decided to make one with a zipper and this is what I came up with...

This bag is also fully lined with a small inside pocket. What do you think, should I add a flower to the outside or leave it as is?

Anyway, that is what I have been up to this past week. Now to go and write some instructions so that I can make some more.

Bloggers Quilt Festival

I came across the Blogger's Quilt Festival through a fellow blogger, Allie, because she had entered her Lemon Tree Quilt in it. So, while I was reading the entry requirements, I thought about entering a quilt. Now we all know that my scrappy Pineapple Log Cabin quilt is my favorite, but the quilt that holds a pretty special place in my heart is this one:

It is not a new quilt. I guess I started it in when I was in a block swap. I made a copy of every block I sent away. When the swap was over, I had a lot of blocks, but not enough to make a quilt. So, I decided to make blocks from leftover fabrics from the quilts I made. I love it because it is my personal sampler block quilt (if that makes any sense). I also enjoyed the quilting because each block is different. So this is the one I will enter. Thanks to Amy who is hosting this festival.

What Have I Been Doing? and a Giveaway

I have not been able to get into my sewing room for a long time. I have been busy, busy, busy...but I did find the time to sew these wallets. I gave one to my daughter one before she went off to college and she wanted a bigger one. So, of course, I ended up making three in different sizes. We will see which one she picks...

Unfortunately, this was the best picture I could take. It was hard to take a good picture with the "see through window". They actually look better in "real life".

Qbot Update and Apricot Moon Designs

So since I got my Qbot (for those who don't know what a Qbot is...it is a quilting robot), I have been practicing and playing around with it. The Qbot comes with a set number of designs (block, overall, border, and corner). There are only two overall designs (roses and puzzle pieces). Since most of my quilts are very busy, I tend to use overall designs. The first few quilts I completed on the frame/Qbot, I practiced free motion quilting (not using the Qbot). Then I completed two quilts using each of the two overall designs. Since I get bored very quickly, I started to look for more overall designs and found that Apricot Moon formatted their designs specifically for the Qbot. So I ordered two overall designs (bubbles and French curl). It was very easy to download and use.

Owl and Lady Bug Pin Cushions

So while I was looking at pin cushion patterns for the swap, I came across a few that I wanted to try. I made an owl pin cushion, I thought it made such a cute stuffed animal...that I made two more. Of course, I kept one and I sent the other two to my daughters. They seemed to like them. The tutorial for this owl pin cushion can be found at the Moda Bake Shop.

My All Time Favorite Quilt

When I look at my all time favorite quilt, it brings back so many memories. I used to take one adult education course at a time. Throughout the years I have taken framing, stained glass, etc.. It was where I took my very first quilting course. My teacher was very old fashioned, she did not allow us to use a rotary cutter or rulers. She taught us to use scissors and templates. I was enjoying the class, but it was not until she brought in an old quilt that I fell in love. She had purchased it unfinished at a garage sale. The quilt pattern was a pineapple log cabin, but it was not flat...it was folded somehow. I searched for that pattern for years and finally found it on line. Of course, I ordered it and made it with all of my scraps...after all, I am a scrappy quilt lover. It took me 5 years (how sad is that?) Because you fold the fabrics, there is a muslin base...which leads to my very first mistake. I should never have added batting because when all was said and done, the quilt was not only way too heavy, but also a bit stiff. So I rolled it and covered it in sheeting and stored it in my closet for "someday". And then last night, it was a bit cold and I thought, "Why not? So what if it's a bit stiff, maybe it will soften with use." It is not only my all time favorite quilt, but also my all time favorite pattern and I wanted to share it with you. Oh, boy, this is wordy...anyway here it is:

Received My Pin Cushion Swap Package

I received my package...YAY!

I am so lucky! My secret partner, Kimberly Roberts, sent me not one, but 2 pin cushions (the second one is behind the 2 buttons). She also sent me two colorful fabrics and 3 vintage lace trims. I love, love, love it. Thank you Kimberly. She also included a magazine, Abaco Life, which is all the way in the back of the picture. It shows pictures and stories of island life.

My Pin Cushion Swap Is Sent to My Secret Partner

Well, I wrapped the pin cushion I made for the Pin Cushion Swap 2 with a fat quarter and added an owl for decoration. I love making these little owls, some sit on a twig and others have a pin sewn to the back. Anyway, I mailed it out to my secret partner today so she should receive it later this week. Hope she likes it...

Funtastic Nawlins

My DH and I just got back from New Orleans...what a blast. I do not think we have ever visited a place where we were so entertained. Yes there was Bourbon Street, but there is so much more. So much more...We did all the typical things, Beignets at Cafe Du Monde (over rated), trolley bus ride (a must do), visiting the cemeteries (WOW), eating crayfish at Deanies (yes!), having a Hurricane drink at Pat O'Brien's (over rated), walking the French Quarter (yes, yes, yes), listening to music at the clubs (there is something for everyone), and visiting the Garden District (a must). Unfortunately our visit to the Botanical Gardens was not as nice as it could have been had the flowers been in bloom.

The best thing about New Orleans was the people. I have never met so many friendly and helpful people. Their energy and pride is infectious......and they love their Saints. Who can blame them?

Bestoff Sculpture Garden

Things that you should also do...visit the Bestoff Sculpture Garden (City Park), eat at Cochon restaurant (Warehouse District), and visit the glass blowing/art studios (Warehouse District). We were lucky enough to hear Jeremy Davenport (the new Armstrong) at the Ritz Carlton. Another unique dining experience was at Jacques-Imos. The food was delicious, the staff was superb and highly attentive, and the eclectic decor was fascinating.

I Really Like These Handbags

I really like the way these handbags turn out. They are sturdy, fully lined, have an inside pocket, and they feel comfortable on your shoulder and arms. I know this sounds funny, but have you ever had a bag that digs into your shoulder or is too bulky under your arm?

It is hard to believe, but this bag takes over 40 yards of piping (clothes line roping) and many hours. However, I do believe that I am getting faster; the first one I made took me twice as long.

Finished My Pin Cushion for the Swap

I finished the pin cushion for the swap I joined. Since the recipient does know that I am their secret partner, I can post a picture of it.

I am hoping to get it in the mail within the week. I hope she likes it. I can't wait to get my pin cushion. Of course I will post a picture of it when I receive it.

Just Received My Prize from the Pets On Quilt Show

I just received my giveaway prize from the Pets On Quilt Show hosted by SewCalGal. I won the 60 charm squares of various purple prints. I have to mention that this is the first prize that I won in a giveaway, Yay...Here are some pics...

Aren't they wonderful? I am so excited, my head is reeling with ideas. Not too sure yet what they will morph into, but I know I will love it because I love the fabrics.

As for my wool pin cushion giveaway that I will be drawing a winner for on Friday, I think I will add some ribbons. Good idea?

Giveaway...Wool Pin Cushion

A few weeks ago, I ran across a picture of a pin cushion on flickr posted by bluegirlxo. I was inspired to make one of my own. I started off with wool from one of my old skirts. I am not sure if anyone else does this, but I cut up the wool into smaller pieces and put them in the washer on the hottest setting. Then I throw the wool pieces in the dryer; which pretty much shrinks it and prevents it from fraying.

Then I took out a package of yo-yo's that I purchased from the Ribbon Factory in East Stroudsburg, PA. Now I usually make my own yo-yo's, but I had to buy them because I loved the colors/fabrics and the price was unbeatable (sorry the picture is not clear).

Then I got out some floss. Now, like I said, I am usually a very organized person and I do have my floss on cards and in see-through cases. However, when I am finished with a project, I just throw the leftovers in a bag. Here is what it looks like.

It is a mess, but it works when I need just a little floss for small projects. Well, this is what I ended up with...my little wool pin cushion.

I had so much fun, I ended up making two more...

I think it is time for me to participate in some swaps...or to do a giveaway. Giveaway it is...this is my first one so we shall see how it goes. I will be giving away either the one on the left with the black and white background or the one on the right with the black background. The outside is made entirely of wool and filled with poly-fil stuffing. Here are some ground rules:

New Closure

I made this bag years ago (many, many years ago). Initially it had a flap closure (sorry, I never took a picture of it). After using it a few times, I realized that I did not like the flap. So, of course, I took the flap off and left it open for a while.

I realized that I did not like it this way either. So, I thought I might try a button closure. I made a fabric covered button (it's a good thing I do not throw out my scraps) and sewed a yo-yo on top of it. I think I am finally finished with this bag.

Does anyone else do this or am I the only one?

A Little Organization

While my daughter was busy packing, I decided to sneak into my sewing room. I knew I did not have much time to do anything, so I looked for something small to do. Now, I am a pretty organized person and my room is fairly organized except for my box of loose ribbon and loose floss. I never plan on changing my loose floss bag because they are all leftovers from kits and I do not have a need to organize them. However, my loose ribbon box...

organize them. I still have a lot more to roll up and store like this, but it's a start. I wish I could say that this is my only ribbon box, but I would be lying:(

Vacationing in Myrtle Beach

Last week, we vacationed in Myrtle Beach. It was absolutely beautiful every single day.

These are some of the pictures...as you can see, beautiful weather. Of course, I found the local quilt shop and made some purchases.

I purchased some fun color rick rack, a few colorful fat quarters, 2 black and white fat quarters for my collection, 5 yards of a colorful orange fabric, and a red wide width fabric. I purchased the orange fabric for our fabric swap (at the firehouse); I bought enough for swapping and also for the back of the quilt I will make after the swap. The red wide fabric is for the red circle quilt that I am sewing at the firehouse. This is what I have done so far...

Unfortunately, I will not be sewing for a while. I will be spending as much time as I can with my girls; they will both be off to college before the end of August.

Little Critter

I was on Needled Mom's blog when I found out about a pet contest on SewCalGal's blog. So I decided to enter my Little Critter wall quilt.

I do not have a pet, but thought I could enter this little critter which was free-motion embroidered on my Janome sewing machine. It was my first attempt on machine embroidery and I enjoyed the process. I completed it about a year ago.

New Rag Doll and An Old Project Finally Framed

I bought this table runner a while ago; it is a bit worn with a few holes here and there, but the two embroidered ends are in very good shape. I was wondering what I would do with it when...

I realized that it would make a really cute dress for a rag doll. So I ended up making this doll. I finally got up enough nerve to embroider the entire face. I usually use buttons or purchased eyes and draw the nose and mouth. I am okay with the way it turned out, it's kinda cute in an ugly way (if that makes any sense).

On an entirely different note, I finally purchased a frame for a project I completed back in October 2009. I am not ashamed...

In the past I have tried a variety of ways to stretch and frame embroidery/cross-stitch projects, but I have found that sewing it is the best way. This is what it looks like in the back. It is a bit messy, but it seems to retain its shape better this way. Gluing the projects tends to form puckers in the front after a while and stapling the back distorts it. It takes a bit longer to sew it, but it is worth it in the end. I use dental floss or upholstery thread.

Well that's it for a while.

Journal Cover using my dyed seam binding, old crochet tableclothes, etc...

Here is my new journal cover. I think it's really cool because I used a lot of stuff that I bought at garage sales and some projects I started a while ago. The rose is embroidered on a garage sale linen napkin and the base is a garage sale runner. The beige with red stripe is a tape that I had left over from when I reupholstered my couches. The red ribbon is the garage sale seam binding that I dyed just a few weeks ago. The buttons are from my collection and the crocheted stars on the left side are from a tablecloth that I had purchased last September. I salvaged what I could (made a smaller tablecloth) and then cut out some of the crocheted blocks to use in this project. I embroidered some flowers and designs where I could. The saying to the right lower corner is Take Time which I plan to do. I really like the way it turned out...now to insert the journal.

A Nice Summer Bag

I made this bag using decorator fabrics. It is quite large. I used a really thick interfacing which was really stiff, so that the bag stands up without any trouble. I ended up using ties because I thought it looked nicer than snaps/zipper.

On another note, I have been working on a journal cover that I will post pics of when I can. It is turning out really cool and different than my other journal covers. Till then...
